JLR Plans Big Fleet of Autonomous Test Vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. says it will begin testing autonomous driving technologies on British roads later this year. The company expects to have more than 100 such vehicles in operation, including some equipped for automated off-road driving, within four years.
The company’s announcement comes as the U.K. vows to sweep away restrictions against testing of robotic cars on public streets—as long as a capable driver is in position to assume control if necessary.
Initial testing will be conducted on a 41-mile (66-km) route covering surface streets and expressways around JLR headquarters in Coventry, England. The company says its self-driving technology combines vehicle-to-vehicle connectivity and internally generated, three-dimensional views of the road ahead.
