JCI to Boost Production of Stop-Start Batteries in N. America
Johnson Controls Inc. says it will invest another $245 million over the next four years to double its North American production of absorbent-glass-mat (AGM) batteries to 11 million units by 2020.
Johnson Controls Inc. says it will invest another $245 million over the next four years to double its North American production of absorbent-glass-mat (AGM) batteries to 11 million units by 2020.
AGM batteries are used in vehicles with automatic engine stop-start systems, a group JCI expects to grow to 50% of the North American market by 2020, and other emerging electrical features. JCI, which is the largest producer of AGM systems, says such batteries have more starting power and are more durable and reliable than conventional lead-acid units.
The company hasn’t finalized where the new AGM lines will be located. The latest North American investment is part of a $780 million global program—including a previously announced $138 million upgrade to its Toledo, Ohio, facility—that JCI is undertaking to boost AGM production.
