India Aims to Go All-Electric by 2030

By 2030, India plans to completely phase out sales of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles in favor of full-electric models.
“We are going to introduce electric vehicles in a very big way," declares Piyush Goyal, the country's minister of coal and mines.
The ambitious program will need two to three years of government support to get started but should become self-sufficient thereafter with production driven by demand rather than subsidies, Goyal tells attendees at the Confederation of Indian Industry Annual Session in Delhi.
The government plans to build a network of charging stations for EVs, starting in large urban areas. Goyal says a battery swap program also is being considered to help alleviate concerns about long recharging times and range anxiety.
