Hyundai Motor Co. plans to produce 3,600 fuel cell-powered crossover vehicles next year, Business Korea reports.
Citing unnamed industry sources, the newspaper says Hyundai wants the new model, tentatively called the “FE,” to be the world's top-selling fuel cell-powered vehicle. Toyota Motor Corp.’s Mirai sedan, which held that distinction last year with sales of 2,800 units, targets volume of about 3,000 cars in 2018. Hyundai sold fewer than 250 Tucson ix35 Fuel Cell vehicles last year.
The Korean carmaker unveiled the FE crossover in concept form at the Geneva auto show in March. The model incorporates Hyundai's fourth-generation fuel cell technology, which claims 30% more power density and 10% greater efficient. The fuel cell system also is 20% lighter and enables a driving range of about 500 miles between hydrogen fill-ups, according to the carmaker.
