Hyundai Mobis Co. says it is developing an autonomous vehicle system that will temporarily take over driving responsibility if it detects a driver is unable to operate the vehicle.

Sensors will determine if a driver has fallen asleep, suffered a heart attack or is experiencing other health conditions that impair the ability to operate the vehicle. The system will then take control of the vehicle’s steering, throttle and braking and guide it to a safe parking spot, the supplier says.

Hyundai Mobis estimates the technology could reduce fatalities caused by incapacitated drivers by as much as 90%. Such “departed driver” scenarios currently are blamed for about 7,000 deaths per year, according to the company, which is presenting research about the technology at this week’s Semicon West conference in San Francisco.
