Hyundai Motor Co. says it will launch an all-new fuel cell-powered crossover vehicle in 2018.
The carmaker, which announced the plans this week at CES in Las Vegas, says the fuel cell vehicle will ride on a new platform and be equipped with advanced driver assist technologies. No other details were provided.
The plans confirm a Nikkei report last month that Hyundai was readying a next-generation version of its current Tucson fuel cell vehicle for 2018. That report indicated the new model would have a driving range of about 560 km (312) miles, more than twice that of today’s Tucson fuel cell.
The Nikkei also says Hyundai is developing a fuel cell-powered commercial bus to be introduced in 2018. Both models are expected to be ready for the Winter Olympics that will be held in Pyeonchang, South Korea, starting in February 2018.
Hyundai previously has said it plans to launch 10 hybrids, 8 plug-in hybrids, 8 full-electric vehicles, and 2 fuel cell models by 2020.
