Hyperloop One plans within a few weeks to test its transport pod system at 250 mph, Reuters reports.

The Los Angeles-based startup, previously known as Hyperloop Technologies Inc., says it is nearly ready for the next test of its 28-foot-long pod in the Nevada desert, this time on rails in open air. The company says it successfully tested a magnetically levitated pod at 70 mph inside a vacuum-sealed tube in May.

Developers claim the system eventually will be able to transport people and goods in 28-foot-long capsules at 750 mph. The extraordinary speed will be enabled by magnetic levitation to cut friction and a combination of linear induction motors, high air pressure behind and a vacuum in front to push them through tubes.

The hyperloop concept was proposed four years ago by Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk. He envisions the technology as enabling mass transit at lower cost and considerably higher speeds than commercial jet planes.
