Liechtenstein-based NanofFowcell AG says it is talking with an unnamed carmaker about commercializing its unique ionic liquid-battery technology for electric vehicles.
A rebranded version of NanoFlowcell’s Quantino concept electric vehicle could be launched within four years, company founder Nunzio La Vecchia tells Autocar. He says the company also may license its technology to other carmakers.
The Quantino coupe, which was updated this year, and earlier Quant FE concept use NanoFlowcell’s low-voltage technology, which is based on “flow cell” chemical batteries refined in the 1970s as part of an energy storage system for NASA’s space program. NanoFlow claims its technology is more durable (up to 10,000 charging cycles) and has five times the energy capacity of lithium-ion batteries.
The flow cell is split in half by a membrane, with a positively charged salt-based electrolyte flowing through one side and a negatively charged fluid flowing through the other. Ions exchanged through the membrane generate an electric current.
