Honda Motor Co. is expanding its assembly plant in Marysville, Ohio, to being making hybrid versions of its Accord sedan this summer.
Honda last offered a hybrid version of the Accord, which was produced in Japan, in 2007. (The company is introducing a two-door Accord plug-in early this year that, at least initially, presumably will be sourced from Japan.)
The $23 million expansion at Marysville will add 95,000 sq. ft. of space for hybrid-specific assembly and logistics. Honda, which did not indicate the capacity being installed, says it will hire about 50 additional workers at the factory.
The company already builds hybrid versions of its Civic sedan and just-introduced Acura ILX entry-level compact at its plant in Greensburg, Ind. The 2014 Accord hybrid will go on sale this autumn.
Last year Honda sold 18,200 hybrids in the U.S., down 42% from its total in 2011, according to Autodata Corp.
