Honda Drops Diesel Option for CR-V Crossover in Europe

Honda Motor Co. is replacing a diesel option for its CR-V crossover in Europe with a hybrid powertrain.
The company plans to present a production-ready version of the new model next week at the Frankfurt auto show. The powertrain swap the company’s 1.6-llter diesel for a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, electric motor and lithium-ion battery. The European CR-V also is available with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.
The hybrid model will be supplied to Europe from Japan. Honda will continue to make conventionally powered CR-Vs at its factory in Swindon, England.
The powertrain marks the carmaker’s return to the hybrid market in Europe after dropping the combo powertrains three years ago because of slow sales. Now the company is betting that hybrids will appeal to European consumers who are rapidly shifting away from diesels.
Separately, Honda plans to reveal an all-electric Urban concept vehicle in Frankfurt next week. The company says the concept previews plans for a future production version of the car.
