Honda Motor Co. CEO Takahiro Hachigo expects fuel cell and battery-powered vehicles will account for a combined 15% of the carmaker’s global sales by 2030 and become the “dominate” vehicle type by 2050.
But first, several technical and logistical issues must be overcome, Hachigo tells Autocar. The challenges for fuel cell vehicle include reducing costs, building a hydrogen refueling infrastructure and finding an efficient source to generate and distribute hydrogen.
And “one more big step” is needed to improve the manufacturability of the fuel cell stack, Hachigo adds. Without such a breakthrough, he notes, it will be difficult to achieve high-volume production similar to that of today’s traditionally powered cars.
In the meantime, Honda will focus on plug-in hybrid vehicles. Hachigo describes that technology as a “necessary step” but not Honda’s ultimate goal of zero-emission transportation.
