Volkswagen AG has selected its Braunschweig, Germany, plant to produce battery systems for the company’s next-generation hybrid and full-electric vehicles.
The facility is expected to produce as many as 500,000 battery systems per year for VW Group brands using the carmaker’s new MEB platform. No timeframe was given for when battery production would start.
Braunschweig will serve as the company’s center of excellence for batteries. This could include helping to prepare additional sites in China and the U.S. The plant also has been chosen to develop vibration dampers and steering systems for future autonomous vehicles.
Braunschweig, VW’s oldest plant, was opened in 1938. The facility currently produces axles, brake parts, running gears, shock absorbers and other chassis components.
VW plans to introduce 80 electric and hybrid models across its eight car brands by 2025. The company aims to offer an electrified version of all 300 of its group models by 2030.RELATED CONTENT
