Harman International Industries Inc. and Baidu Inc. have agreed to jointly develop cloud-based artificial intelligence systems for the Chinese auto market.
The two companies will integrate Baidu’s DuerOS-based personal digital assistant and voice recognition technologies with Harman’s connected car and cloud platforms. DuerOS is an open operating system for a voice-activated digital assistant for mobile phones, televisions, speakers and other devices, while allowing third-party developer access.
The companies aim to create features such as automatic speech recognition in English and Mandarin, natural language processing and speech synthesis. The new partnership builds on a two-year program between Harman and Baidu to launch CarLife, a vehicle networking system for advanced internet capabilities, entertainment features and location-based services on Harman's in-vehicle infotainment head units.
Baidu, described as China’s largest internet service provider, has expanded into the auto industry in recent years and now is developing systems for autonomous vehicles. Harman, a Stamford, Conn.-based audio and telematics giant, was purchased last year by South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co.
