Google Inc. says it will begin testing self-driving cars on public streets in Kirland, Wash., by the end of February.
The company, a unit of Alphabet Inc., began testing the technology around its headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., six years ago. It added Austin, Tex., last year.
Google say it is expanding into Washington to broaden its experience with rainy roads, hilly terrain and new traffic patterns. The company began mapping roads in North Kirkland last month.
Reuters notes that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has advised developers it is willing to exempt as many as 2,500 self-driving vehicles from federal safety standards for two years to help accelerate research on autonomous-driving technology.
