Google Inc. says it is building a 53,000 sq-ft development center 25 miles northwest of Detroit to make it easier to collaborate with auto industry partners on its self-driving technology.
One of the center’s first assignments will be to outfit about 100 Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans with Google’s latest autonomous systems. The company and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV confirmed in early May they will collaborate on the project, which will create Google’s largest test fleet to date.
Google says it will move an unspecified number of staffers into the Novi, Mich., facility through the remainder of this year. The company currently is testing its self-drive systems on public roadways in Arizona, California, Texas and Washington. Michigan also permits testing automatic vehicles on public roads.
