General Motors Co. has told workers at its assembly plant outside Sao Paulo, Brazil, that it will suspend production for two weeks beginning Feb. 13, according to the facility’s metalworking union.
Union leader Antonio Ferreira de Barros says GM gave no reason for the shutdown at the Sao Jose dos Campos factory. He speculates the stoppage may be “a consequence of the diplomatic relations between Mexico and the U.S. after Donald Trump took office.”
Brazil’s car market, which has been shrinking for four years, saw sales plunge 20% in 2016. The GM plant makes Trailblazer SUVs and S10 midsize pickup trucks.
