Denmark and 10 other member nations of the European Union have urged the region to allow them to end gasoline and diesel engine sales by 2030.

Denmark declared in 2018 that it intended to adopt that goal for itself. But the government later retracted the pledge because it would violate European Commission rules.
The EU has declared a goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. The bloc aims to lower overall carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles 40% by 2030. But it has not agreed to an outright ban on vehicular CO2 emissions by 2050.
Denmark tells Reuters that its proposal to allow member state-level bans is intended to pressure the EU to adopt the same goal for the entire region.
