General Motors Co. has formed what it describes as an “unprecedented” partnership with South Korea’s LG Group to supply batteries and other components for GM’s upcoming Chevrolet Bolt electric sedan.

The two companies have worked together since 2007, and LG supplied batteries for the Chevrolet Volt hybrid when it launched in 2010.

LG will produce the GM-designed motor for the Bolt, along with the car’s power controller, onboard charger, battery, infotainment system and instrumentation.

The Korean company says its electronic and vehicle components unit already has invested some $250 million in Korea to make components for the Bolt. GM showed the car in concept form at the Detroit auto show in January.

GM plans to introduce the Bolt as the industry’s first true mass-market EV. The car is expected to cost about $30,000 after federal rebates and be able to travel 200 miles (322 km) per charge.
