General Motors Co. is introducing a more powerful in-car charging system for its 2019 model Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid sedan that cuts charging time nearly 50% to 2.3 hours.

The new 7.2-kW system, which requires a 240-volt outlet, replaces the current 3.6-kW charger. The feature will be standard on the top-end Premier trim level and optional for the LT version.

The range of the 2019 Volt is unchanged at 420 miles. The fully charged battery can propel the car for about 53 miles, the same as in this year’s model. Then the Volt’s onboard generator, which is powered by a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, kicks in to replenish the battery as the car is moving.

Other updates to the 2019 Volt include improved regenerative capability, revised cabin heating system, rearview camera and improved pedestrian audio alert package. The car will go on sale in the U.S. this autumn.
