German Chancellor Angela Merkel promises the country’s carmakers swift action on rules that will enable them to test autonomous cars on public roads.

Merkel suggests the companies develop a “wish list” for her ruling coalition and present it ahead of the group's meeting at the end of May, Reuters reports. The question of government support, she declares, is “not a disputed topic.”

The coalition also hopes to coax Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble today to approve a government-backed sales incentive scheme to bolster sales of electric vehicles in Germany.

Merkel set a goal more than three years ago of putting 1 million electrified vehicles on the road by 2020. She also has called for subsidies to boost demand and install charging stations. But demand has been low, in large part because of government dithering over whether it should incentivize the EV industry with sales and infrastructure aid.
