The French government plans to request that Volkswagen AG refund government-paid incentives to support sales of cars involved in the company's diesel emission scandal, according to the country's energy and environment minister.
France has funded discounts of €1,000 for "clean" cars, including certain VW diesel models. VW acknowledges it sold about 946,000 diesel-powered cars in France that were equipped with software to defeat their emission controls.
The French government demand follows a similar request by the Spanish government. Earlier this week Spain's industry minister announced that VW has agreed to return €1,000 state-funded subsidies on the purchase of cars with rigged diesels.
