Ford Won’t Promise to Keep Belgium Plant Open

Union officials from Genk met with Ford of Europe CEO Stephen Odell this week, according to Automotive News Europe. The ABVV union tells the Web-based newspaper that Odell would not offer any reassurances about the facility's future. But Odell added that he wasn't giving guarantees to unions at the company's other plants in the region either.
Bloomberg reported in July that the Genk factory and van facility in Southampton, England, are considered most vulnerable. Ford faces pressure to close at least one assembly plant in Europe.
Ford has said it must restructure in the region to align capacity with demand. The Genk factory made 178,000 Mondeo cars and S-Max and Galaxy MPVs in 2011. That was about two-thirds of its annual capacity close to the company's average in Europe.
