Ford Touts European Speed-Limit Tech
Ford Motor Co. says its optional “intelligent speed limiter” technology was specified on about two-thirds of the vehicles it was offered on in Europe last year.
Ford Motor Co. says its optional “intelligent speed limiter” technology was specified on about two-thirds of the vehicles it was offered on in Europe last year.
The carmaker launched the system in 2015. It is currently available on the Edge, Galaxy, Kuga and S-Max and Galaxy and will be added to the next-generation Fiesta.
Integrating Ford’s traffic sign recognition camera and adjustable speed limiter systems, the intelligent speed limiter technology allows drivers to set a vehicle speed of 5 mph above posted limits when travelling between 20 mph and 120 mph. When a change in speed limit is detected, the system applies the throttle or alters engine torque to adjust fuel delivery and vehicle speed accordingly.
The system also sounds an alarm if the maximum threshold speed is exceeded on a steep downhill gradient. Drivers can override the system at any time by applying the accelerator or brakes.
Map data can be used in vehicles equipped with onboard navigation units to further improve accuracy, Ford says. The company notes that the traffic sign recognition system can read signs across all European countries.
