Ford Patents Design that Houses Lidar in Side Mirrors
Ford Motor Co. has received a patent for integrating lidar sensors into exterior rearview mirror assemblies for next-generation autonomous vehicles.
Ford Motor Co. has received a patent for integrating lidar sensors into exterior rearview mirror assemblies for next-generation autonomous vehicles.
The system features a conductive mirror base to shield the lidar from electromagnetic interference. The patent describes several types of covers, including metallzed, injection-molded and vacuum metalized units.
Most early prototype autonomous vehicles use unsightly roof-mounted spinning lidar arrays. Emerging solid state lidar designs can be hidden behind the front fascia or otherwise be integrated into a vehicle’s design.
