California-based electric vehicle startup Fisker Inc. plans to begin testing its Orbit self-driving shuttle in China later this year.

The futuristic-looking pod is intended for applications in geo-fenced areas, such as airports, corporate and college campuses, city centers, resorts and parks. Fisker announced the Orbit in December as part of a partnership with China’s Hakim Unique Group, which specializes in connected-vehicle technologies.

The shuttle is designed to work in highly connected environments. The pilot program will begin in Hangzhou, China, which bills itself as a “smart city” and is where Hakim is based. Following the tests, Fisker hopes to start commercial applications as early as next year.

The shuttle is expected to use Fisker’s next-generation solid-state battery technology, a system the company plans to launch in its Emotion electric coupe next year. The interior of the shuttle is described as more akin to a hotel lobby than that of a traditional car.
