Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV decided on Thursday not to attend a meeting requested by Germany’s transport minister to discuss possible emission violations by FCA’s diesel engines.
FCA canceled the meeting on short notice in a letter from its lawyer claiming Germany has no authority over the Italian company, Bloomberg News reports. Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt promptly declared FCA’s “uncooperative conduct” as “totally incomprehensible.”
Italy’s transport ministry says FCA is cooperating with its own diesel emission investigation. The agency suggests the two ministries discuss compliance issues directly with each other. Dobrindt says Germany’s federal transport authority (KBA) will forward its findings to the Italian ministry.
European regulations allow manufacturers to set up the emission control systems of their diesels so they cut off briefly under narrow conditions to avoid damaging the engine. But KBA tests suggests some vehicle makers have abused the allowance.
