FCA Files for U.S. Certification of Diesel Software Update

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has applied with regulators in the U.S. to certify the emission levels of its 2017 model diesel-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs and Ram 1500 pickup trucks—and use the new software involved to update 2014-2016 models of the same vehicles.

FCA has been in talks for months over charges by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board that 104,000 of the older diesels were rigged to evade emission standards. The vehicles use a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel that includes software controls that FCA failed to report to regulators as required by law.

The company says it believes the updated software for 2017 addresses the regulatory concerns. It continues to assert that the older software’s behavior doesn’t indicate any effort by FCA to cheat on emission tests.
