Developers Tout 5G Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication System

Researchers from the University of Valencia in Spain are developing a 5G-based communication technology that they say will make it easier for vehicles to share information with each other and improve overall road safety.
The system includes three programmable cards, each of which has a high-performance field-programmable gate array and four antennas. The architecture integrates several radio waveforms. This will allow vehicles to communicate directly with each other over 5G mobile networks rather than having to communicate over a dedicated frequency, according to the developers.
The researchers detailed the system at last month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. They developed the technology under the European Commission’s METIS-II program, which is evaluating how to best use 5G communication systems as the fifth-generation technology is introduced over the next few years.
An animated demonstration video of the technology can be seen here.
