Delphi Automotive plc and Mobileye NV have agreed to collaborate to develop a complete autonomous driving platform they hope to market to carmakers by 2019.
Their system will meet SAE International’s definition of a “level 4/5” autonomous system, meaning technology that can pilot a vehicle automatically under almost all driving conditions.
The partners figure their project will cost a few hundred million dollars to complete. Mobileye will contribute computer chips and software used to process sensor data from cameras, radar, sonar and other devices. Delphi will integrate the system. The companies plan to debut their system in prototype form at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
Delphi and Mobileye have worked together since 2002 on so-called active safety features, which are building blocks for fully autonomous driving systems.
