Daimler AG is spending €500 million ($589 million) to prepare its Smart minicar assembly plant in Hambach, France, to make a small electric car for the company’s Mercedes-Benz brand.
The French factory already makes an all-electric version of the Smart ForTwo two-seater. The unnamed Mercedes EV will join the unit’s new EQ electric-car sub-brand.
Mercedes reiterates its plan to make Smart an all-electric brand by 2020. The unit also intends to introduce more than 10 electric models by 2022 in each of its vehicle segments, beginning with an all-electric SUV in 2019.
Daimler expects electric powertrains will propel 15%-25% of all Mercedes vehicles sold annually by 2025.
