Daimler AG is spending €100 million to hike capacity to make lithium-ion batteries for its future plug-in and electric car models.
Predicting "high and steadily growing demand," Daimler says it will use the investment to bolster output at its Deutsche Accumotive batterymaking unit in Saxony. The project will expand batterymaking and logistics space to 20,000 square meters, about four times the space when the company began operations in 2011.
The facility has produced 50,000 batteries to date. It currently makes such systems for hybrid versions of the Smart ForTwo city car and Mercedes-Benz C-, E- and S-Class sedans.
Daimler says Deutsche Accumotive also intends to pursue battery programs for stationary applications.
