Daimler AG has launched production of Mercedes-Benz E-Class midsize sedans at a new factory north of Moscow.

The 19 billion-ruble ($292 million) complex in Moscovia (pictured) will employ more than 1,000 workers and build as many as 25,000 vehicles per year for the local market. The factory plans to add an E-Class SUV/crossover model later.

The facility is the first new foreign-owned auto plant to open in Russia in many years. Daimler says the factory will perform welding, water-soluble painting, assembly and quality inspection operations.

In 2018, Mercedes sales in Russia rose 3% to 37,800 units, according to the Moscow- based Assn. of European Businesses.

Russia’s overall light-vehicle market climbed to a record 2.94 million units in 2012. But economic sanctions shrank the market to 1.42 million by 2016. Sales have revived since then, rising 13% to 1.80 million last year.
