Daimler AG and its China production partner, BAIC Motor Corp., have agreed to enable their Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Beijing to make cars with hybrid and all-electric powertrains.

Daimler also will buy a minority stake in BAIC Group’s Beijing Electric Vehicle Co. subsidiary. The German company already produces an EV through a separate joint venture with China’s BYD Co. and markets it under BYD’s Denza brand.

Mercedes said previously it will introduce more than 10 electrified models in China by 2022. The first, an all-electric sporty crossover based on the Generation EQ concept it presented at the Paris auto show last year, is due in 2019.
