Court Orders Fiat to Reinstate Some Laid-Off Workers

An appeals court in Rome has ordered Fiat SpA to bring back to work 145 laid-off employees at its Pomigliano, Italy, assembly plant.
The decision was a rejection of the company's appeal of a lower court ruling in June, which involves members of the dissident Fiom-CGIL.
Fiat says it is reviewing the new ruling and may appeal the decision to Italy's Supreme Court.
The company laid off all 4,500 workers at the Pomigliano factory during retooling last year. Since production resumed last December, Fiat has recalled only 2,150 of those employees. Fiom members are among those waiting to return to their jobs.
The union told the court the company is discriminating against its members because Fiom was the only union at Pomigliano that refused to sign a new contract with more flexible work rules.
The company points out that the Pomigliano plant is already overstaffed. Its workers have been sent home for 20 days this year because of plunging Fiat vehicle sales.
