Annual worldwide sales of clean diesel-powered light-duty vehicles will grow to 12.1 million units by 2018 from 9.1 million this year, predicts Pike Research LLC.
The Boulder, Colo.-based research firm says demand for diesels all of them using clean technology to meet government emission standards is beginning to expand in the U.S. It forecasts sales will reach 928,000 units in 2018 from 282,000 units this year, slightly surpassing demand for hybrids. The firm expects more modest growth globally, with western Europe continuing to lead all other markets with about 50% penetration.
Pike notes that some of the world's strongest markets for light-duty diesels don't yet have emission standards in place that force adoption of clean technology. It cites a "tremendous" potential growth in such systems as global pollution standards tighten.
