Jianghuai Automobile Co. has begun assembling small crossovers in Hidalgo, Mexico, from kits imported from China.

The company is producing its S2 and S3 subcompact SUVs through a venture with Mexico’s Giant Motors Latinoamerica SA. JAC has not indicated its sales targets. But the company tells Automotive News China it would consider eventually importing vehicles to the U.S.

Giant Motors, which is backed by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, told the Financial Times last month that it wants to establish the company as a hub for exports to Latin America. CEO Elias Massri notes that Giant Motors’ success doesn’t depend on the North American Free Trade Agreement for exports or components.

Last year JAC sold 642,300 vehicles worldwide, including 59,000 units exported to markets in the Middle East, Russia, North Africa and South America, according to ANC.
