Several of China’s largest carmakers are calling for the country to set unified rules for the “internet of vehicles” that will enable cars to communicate with each other and their environment, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reports.
Connectivity is considered a critical enabler of autonomously controlled vehicles.
Zhy Huarong, president of Changan Auto, says standards are urgently needed to avoid “a serious waste of resources” that would result if each manufacturer develops its own interface to connect to such a network.
Miao Wei, the country’s minister of industry and information technology, has estimated that China’s annual market for intelligent connected vehicles will surpass 100 billion yuan ($15 billion) next year.
