Car manufacturers are far ahead of Silicon Valley companies in the number of patents they have filed for technology related to self-driving vehicles, according to an analysis by Thomson Reuters.
The patent review ranks Toyota first with more than 1,400 patents on autonomous-car technology. That’s more than twice the number filed by second-place Bosch, which is followed by Denso, Hyundai and General Motors. The highest-ranked tech company, Google, is 26th.
But Thomson Reuters points out that patent volume doesn’t necessarily mean leadership in technology. It also cautions that patents are filed 18 months before they become public, so tech companies may be gaining ground.
Ultimately, the analysis says, car companies and tech companies must form alliances to bring driverless cars to market.
