A delegation of California legislators is urging Tesla Motors Inc. CEO Elon Musk to consider their state for Tesla's second electric-car battery plant, the weekly Silicon Valley Business Journal reports.
Last month Tesla chose Nevada for the company's first such facility, a 10 million-sq-ft factory with an estimated price tag of $5 billion. Musk previously suggested the company could build two or more such factories, but he has been vague about timing.
A second factory appears highly unlikely for now. The first facility will begin making lithium-ion cells in 2017. Tesla expects the plant to achieve capacity by 2020 to make batteries for 500,000 EVs per year roughly twice Tesla's projected annual sales by then.
California's delegation is promoting the state's quality of life, burgeoning "green" energy industry and what it describes as "the nation's smartest workforce," according to the newspaper.
