VDL Groep, a Dutch bus maker, has acquired the Netherlands Car BV (NedCar) assembly plant from Mitsubishi Motors Corp. for a token €1.
MMC makes the Colt small car at the factory but said in February it would end production there by year-end. The facility has capacity to build 200,000 vehicles per year on two shifts.
The plant will be renamed VDL NedCar and become a contract vehicle assembler. VDL confirms the facility will make Mini cars for BMW AG beginning in mid-2014. Until then, the factory's 15,000 workers will be laid off at full pay.
VDL supplies car and truck parts and makes automated production lines for the auto industry.
