Robert Bosch GmbH is setting up van-sharing service in Germany that customers of hardware retailer Rewe Group can use to transport their heavy or bulky purchases from store to home.

The service will use electric vans built by Deutsche Post startup StreetScooter and equipped with Bosch’s electric powertrain. Rewe will deploy the rent-by-the-hour  service at five of its toon brand home improvement and do-it-yourself stores in Berlin, Frankfurt, Freiburg, Leipzig and Troisdorf.

Bosch says the app-based service will begin in December. Customers will be able to reserve a van ahead of visiting a store or rent one on site as they complete their purchase. The all-digital transaction covers mileage and battery charging.

Assuming the initial tests are successful, Bosch plans to expand the service to other toom stores and partner with others to provide similar support for furniture stores, supermarkets and consumer electronics outlets.
