Robert Bosch GmbH has acquired California-based Seeo Inc., which claims its solid-state lithium-ion battery design could extend the driving range of electric cars by 50%-100%. Terms were not disclosed.
The 8-year-old Seeo says its DryLyte batteries are lighter, perform the same regardless of ambient temperature and offer significantly greater energy density than conventional lithium-ion batteries. The company also says the nonflammable solid polymer electrolyte in its batteries is immune to "runaways" that can cause other lithium batteries to overheat the catch fire.
Seeo has an exclusive licensing deal to use key patents held by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
