Insurer Allianz along with BMW, Toyota and an unidentified third carmaker have agreed to license artificial intelligence technology from Nauto, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based startup.
Nauto tells Reuters the companies each are buying unspecified equity stakes in the company. They will use Nauto’s AI-based vehicle network to better understand driver behavior and thereby polish the performance of self-driving test vehicles.
The Nauto system uses cameras, GPS, sensors and data from the cloud to put driver behavior into context. The company says its technology can detect safety issues outside the vehicle and such distractions inside such as texting while driving. It also captures “near-miss” incidents.
The objective is to aggregate data that shows how good drivers handle urban driving conditions—and how various errors, distractions and other circumstances can lead to vehicle crashes.
