After a one-year hiatus, BMW AG will offer a diesel engine on the 5 Series midsize sedan in the U.S. for the 2018 model year.
The carmaker confirmed the plans with Car and Driver but provided no details other than the diesel variant will be called the 540d. In Europe, the diesel-powered 530d’s 3.0-liter straight-six-cylinder engine produces 262 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. A higher-output version of that engine is expected in the U.S. model.
BMW says the European-spec diesel, which is mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission, is 13% more fuel efficient than its predecessor. The carmaker’s xDrive all-wheel drive system is optional.
The 2018 5 Series diesel is expected to be launched in the U.S. by year-end. BMW currently offers diesel engines in the U.S. in its 3 Series small car and X3 and X5 crossover vehicles.
