BMW AG is adding several new features to the Connected Services platform it launched earlier this year.
As part of the upgrades, BMW will expand the service to Google Inc.’s Android smartphones. The carmaker previously had offered the platform only on Apple Inc.’s iPhones.
Other improvements include integration with Apple smart watches and Amazon.com’s “Alexa” system. The latter can be used to remotely control select vehicle functions from a user’s home, such as locking/unlocking, starting the engine, setting the temperature, checking fuel levels or battery charge status. Hyundai Motor Co.’s Genesis luxury division introduced the Alexa feature this summer.
BMW also is adding a “first mile/last mile” navigation feature that provides walking directions if a vehicle is parked far away from the driver's location or destination.
