The newly formed Bloomberg Aspen Initiative on Cities and Autonomous Vehicles has selected the first five cities to participate in its program, which aims to help cities make the best use of autonomous and connected vehicles.
The initial group includes Austin, Texas; Buenos Aries, Argentina; Nashville, Tenn.; Los Angeles; and Paris. Five more cities will be chosen later this year.
Participating cities will work with urban planners and technologists to help them prepare for self-driving cars and develop related programs to benefit residents and local businesses. City planners and the various mayors will share ideas and data throughout the program.
Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the initiative this week at the CityLab mayoral conference in Miami. His Bloomberg Philanthropies group is teaming with Washington, D.C.-based Aspen Institute on the project. Companies such as car-sharing giant Lyft Inc. also have pledged support.
