BMW AG hopes to introduce its first fuel cell-powered car early next decade, Reuters reports. The vehicle likely will be a large sedan that uses compressed hydrogen to extend driving range, Merten Jung, who heads BMW’s fuel cell development program, tells the news agency.
BMW has been jointly developing hydrogen fuel cell-related technology with Toyota Motor Corp. since 2013. That program ends in 2020. Jung says it’s unlikely the two companies will partner on a production fuel cell vehicle, noting that they typically target different vehicle segments.
Toyota introduced its first fuel cell car, the Mirai, last year. That vehicle has a driving range of 435 miles. Honda Motor Co. launched its Clarity fuel cell vehicle this week.
