Ford Motor Co.’s 2017 Focus electric sedan will feature a 33.5-kWh lithium-ion battery pack in place of the current model’s 23-kWh unit, says InsideEVs.com.
The 46% increase in battery capacity, which the website discovered on a leaked spec sheet, would extend the EV’s driving range to about 110 miles from 76 miles today. The 2017 model also will get a DC fast-charging system that can replenish the battery to 80% of its capacity within 30 minutes, according to the report.
Ford previously indicated plans to increase the Focus EV’s range to about 100 miles. Company officials maintained there was no need to go much beyond that level, which was deemed sufficient for most daily commuters. But a 100-mile range is only half that of new models being developed by General Motors, Nissan and Tesla.
Ford is expected to unveil the next-generation Focus EV in November at the Los Angeles auto show before launching the vehicle early next year.
