German chemical giant BASF SE and Toda Kogyo Corp. have begun negotiations to combine their cathode active materials (CAM) businesses for lithium-ion batteries in North America.
The companies launched a similar joint venture, called BASF Toda Battery Materials LLC, last year in Japan. As with that company, BASF would have a majority ownership stake in the proposed North American collaboration, according to the partners.
The new venture would produce a range of CAM and related materials in North America for use in lithium-ion batteries for the automotive, consumer electronics and stationary storage markets.
BASF opened a CAM facility in Ohio in 2012. The company licenses nickel-cobalt-manganese technology developed by Argonne National Laboratory and lithium-iron-phosphate technology from Switzerland-based LiFePO4+C Licensing AG.
Toda Kogyo specializes in a “wet synthesis” metal-oxide process. It uses the technique to make lithium-cobaltate, lithium-nickel oxide and lithium-manganate materials.
