BASF Building $10 Billion China Complex

Chemical giant BASF SE has begun constructing on a multi-facility manufacturing site in Zhanjiang, China, that will produce engineering plastics and thermoplastic polyurethane for automotive and electronics applications.
The $10 billion “Verbund” project will be BASF’s largest investment ever. When it is completed in 2030, the vertically integrated complex will be BASF’s third-largest production site, following locations in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium.
The first Zhanjiang plant is due to become operational in 2022 with capacity to produce 60,000 metric tons of plastic engineering compounds per year. This will increase BASF’s Asia Pacific annual capacity to 290,000 metric tons.
BASF says it will employ automated packaging, high-tech control systems and automated guided vehicles throughout the plants.
